Kondraty Hvatit
Kondraty Hvatit, a graphic artist and ceramist born and raised in Izhevsk, Russia, now residing and working in Vienna, Austria, crafts an artistic universe born from the deconstruction and reassembly of trauma. His work explores themes of memory, gender identity, transgender experiences, and migration, transforming personal narratives into harmoniously unsettling visual narratives. He achieves this through a meticulous process of dismantling traumatic experiences and imagery, then reconstructing their fragments into novel creatures that inhabit a space liberated from patriarchal norms and capitalist constraints. Faces, heads, and fragmented body parts multiply and interweave, forming bizarre yet cohesive entities, challenging conventional expectations of representation and body image. Employing traditional coiling and sgraffito techniques, Hvatit's ceramic works mirror his ink drawings on paper, creating a cohesive body of work that is both deeply personal and universally resonant.
